We offer a full range of medical services in routine appointments.
Antenatal Care
We provide a shared care antenatal service with The Royal Free and University College Hospitals. Pregnancy can be confirmed by a simple urine test purchased at the chemist. Please see your doctor as soon as you know you are pregnant to discuss booking arrangements on a non urgent appointment.
Baby Clinic
A walk-in clinic is run by the health visitor every Friday between 2.00 - 3.30pm. You will have opportunity to discuss feeding issues and your baby can be weighed.
Please do not bring acutely ill babies to this clinic. Kindly book a separate appointment to see the nurse for your child's immunisations and the doctor for six week and postnatal check-ups. Remember to bring your baby's red book with you at all times.
Minor Surgery
Certain minor surgical procedures are performed such as removal of lumps, warts, verrucas and joint injections. Please make a routine appointment.
Ill-Health Prevention
Alcohol
If you feel your social life revolves around alcohol, you're drinking alone or in the morning or you're unable to stop once you start, you may have a problem. The safe limits for men are three to four units of alcohol a day and two to three units per day for women. Pregnant women should try to avoid alcohol altogether. Please feel free to discuss things further with your doctor or nurse.
Breast Examination And Mammography
We advise all women to learn to examine their breasts regularly. Please ask for a leaflet. Contact your doctor immediately if you find a lump. Mammography is available three yearly for women between the ages of 50 and 64, especially those with a family history of breast cancer, and on request after the age of 64 every three years. If you have not been called for mammography, please inform your doctor.
Cervical Smears
All women should have three-yearly cervical smears between the age of 25 and 49 years and every five years between the age of 50 and 64. You can make a routine appointment with the practice nurse.Please note that the appointment should be made when you are mid-cycle; this is approximately 14 days from the first day of your last period. Smears cannot be taken if you are menstruating. Results take six to eight weeks to be reported by the PCT. A copy of this result will be sent directly to you and one to the practice.
Childhood Immunisations
We strongly recommend that all children are immunised. The UK immunisation programme includes vaccinations against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, haemophilus influenzae, meningitis C and pneumococcal pneumonia.
These diseases can cause severe life threatening illnesses and some are incurable eg. polio. Please do not hesitate to discuss any queries with your doctor or nurse.

Cholesterol
If you have a personal or strong family history of heart disease and wish to have your cholesterol checked, please consult your doctor or nurse.
Chronic Disease Management
Appointments are available with the practice nurse to review and support patients with asthma, diabetes, heart disease, strokes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other chronic diseases.
Family Planning
Available with your doctor or nurse at a routine appointment. Emergency contraception (the morning after pill) is available after unprotected intercourse or if your method of birth control fails, but you must be seen within 72 hours of the event.
Alternatively, obtain this over the counter from your pharmacist. Please note that coils and other long acting contraceptions are available at the Margaret Pyke family planning clinic.
Health Checks
Any patient between the age of 16 and 74 who has not attended the surgery in the past three years may request a health check appointment. If you have not had a blood pressure test , or been weighed or had your height measured for over a year please speak to reception , you will be instructed on how to do a check yourself at surgery.
Smoking
If you would like help to give up smoking please book a smoking cessation appointment with our nurse. She is able to offer advice and support to help you stop smoking. You can also call the NHS Smoking helpline on 0800 169 0169.
Stress
Learn a meditation technique and practice it daily if possible. The purpose is to empty your mind of disturbing thoughts and encourage mental relaxation. Take a short period of time out from any stressful situation you encounter during the day.
Adopt an exercise programme.
Testicular Examination
All men should examine themselves for testicular lumps regularly. A leaflet is available to show you how this should be done.
Any irregularity or lump should be checked by your doctor.
Tetanus And Polio Boosters
The Department of Health recommends that adults should have a tetanus and polio booster every 10 years.If you have never had a full course of tetanus or polio immunisations please make an appointment with the practice nurse.
Travel Vaccinations
If you intend to travel abroad, especially to developing countries, it is important to see the practice nurse in good time for your vaccination. Travel vaccination appointments should be made at least four weeks before your departure. We may not be able to help you if you do not book your appointment in sufficient time. The nurse will give you advice on immunisations and malaria protection when you attend your appointment. If your trip involves a complex itinerary it is advisable to contact the Hospital For Tropical Diseases helpline on 09061 337733 for advice.
They will send you an information sheet which you should bring to your appointment. There is a fee for non-NHS vaccinations and travel prescriptions provided by the surgery. The reception staff will be able to advise you of our current fees. Please note that you will be asked to pay by cash or cheque after each appointment with the nurse. It is important that you keep an up-to-date record of your immunisations. To facilitate this we can provide an immunisation record for a nominal fee. Also note that the practice is not a yellow fever centre and some travel vaccinations such as Japanese encephalitis are not available from us. We will inform
you of where to go for these.
Non-NHS Services
The surgery charges a fee for all non-NHS services provided including private certificates and prescriptions, insurance claim forms, reports and passports and driving licence forms. Payment in advance by cash or cheque is required for all non-NHS services. Our current tariff of fees is clearly displayed in the surgery.
Medicals for insurance, employment, fitness to travel etc, are by special appointment only. A fee will be charged for such appointments.
